The Blue Lady cocktail emerges as a vibrant member of the colorful Lady lineage, with Victor Cabrin as its creative force. While the origin of the White Lady cocktail remains draped in the veils of history, Victor was undoubtedly enamored with “ladies” in the world of cocktails, birthing several hued variations, including the Blue Lady.
In essence, the Blue Lady is a riff on the White Lady.
Its key component is Blue Curaçao, a liqueur infused with the essence of bitter orange dried peels, and imbued with a striking artificial blue hue. Naturally, Curaçao is colorless, but for sheer amusement, it often takes on this vivid artificial tint.
The cocktail offers a straightforward yet pleasing flavor profile, making it an easy-drinking delight that also captures the eye.
This recipe made its debut in 1937 within W.J. Tarling’s “Café Royal Cocktail Book,” attributed to Victor Cabrin.
Interestingly, alongside the Blue Lady cocktail, there exists another creation known as the Lady in Blue. This cocktail is credited to Harry MacElhone, the progenitor of the White Lady prototype and one of the claimants to the White Lady’s legacy. While it also features Blue Curaçao in its composition, the Lady in Blue boasts a more intricate blend of ingredients and a correspondingly complex taste, enticing the curious palate. It’s a tempting choice worth exploring.
