Pink Flirtini

Today marks February 14, the day of love, roses, and chocolates – Valentine’s Day. On such a special occasion, I couldn’t resist crafting something thematic – a drink that’s pink, light, bubbly, and fittingly named.

The Pink Flirtini was originally concocted for none other than Sarah Jessica Parker, the iconic actress known for her role as Carrie Bradshaw in “Sex and the City.” This libation was born in the skilled hands of a bartender at Guastavino’s in New York City.

Now, let’s delve into the name itself and the fascinating story behind the word “flirt.” Two years ago, I had the unique opportunity to visit the very place where this word originated and encountered the woman whose name contributed to its creation. This is the tale of a heedless king and his ill-fated sweetheart.

Henry of Navarre was a lifelong admirer of women, and women adored him in return. During his youth, while residing at his father’s court in Nerac, he fell in love with Fleurette, the daughter of the royal gardener. Their love story was passionate, yet one day, Henry’s carelessness led him to miss a crucial rendezvous. Tragically, the legend tells us that the heartbroken Fleurette met her end in the depths of a fountain.

It’s from her name, Fleurette, that the English word “flirt” was born, carrying with it the notion of playful and amorous interactions.

This statue of Fleurette has been sculptured in the XIX century and placed in the old fountain in Nerac park.

As a nod to this etymology, the Pink Flirtini is a tribute to those who are fortunate in love. This cocktail embodies the essence of romance, making it a perfect choice for celebrating cherished love stories on this special day.

Raise your glass to the lucky lovers, and may your Valentine’s Day be filled with love, laughter, and delightful sips of the Pink Flirtini.

Ingredients:
-1/2 oz / 15 ml pineapple juice
-1/2 oz / 15 ml cranberry juice
-1/2 oz / 15 ml fresh lemon juice
-1/2 oz / 15 ml triple sec
-1 oz / 30 ml strawberry vodka (or a couple of strawberries and regular vodka)
-Champagne (or other dry sparkling wine)

Process:
Pour all the ingredients except Champagne into a cocktail shaker over ice and shake gently. Strain into the chilled cocktail glass. Top with Champagne.

A Note on Vodka: If you prefer not to purchase strawberry vodka (after all, many flavored vodkas can vary in quality), there’s a delightful alternative. Simply take two to three ripe strawberries, muddle them in your shaker, and then use your favorite high-quality vodka. This natural infusion adds a delicious dimension to your Pink Flirtini, proving that sometimes, the authentic taste surpasses the synthetic.

Decoration – strawberry.
